Big Sid- Scene it.

Its interesting how the scene has evolved the longer you stay. All though the Portland Hip-hop scene isn't huge, but no matter what aspect of hip-hop you are immersed in there is always some type of "nature next-step" to enhancing your aspect(s) of the culture you hold near and dear. It definitely took some time to personally figure what the next step was to do. Networking is the natural step, getting your name out there as well as building upon the scene and cultivate it. I finally feel I can put myself out there and contribute, I substituted a hip-hop in Salem during the beginning of July. The only way I could experience this was by putting myself in the position and I realize how dope it is. I know I can't make an army of B-Girls and B-Boys, but I can help cultivate this relatively new to the mainstream aspect of hip-hop into all forms of dance and life. There is a "natural step" for everyone, what is/was yours?

A new life after the 5th sun

What up y'all. I got a new painting hot off the press. This is done on a 40"x30" canvas using acrylics.
The title of this piece is still in the mix...but it goes like this "Where she walks is the beginning. Where she looks is the sign of the past". This is 2009, so come wit' it

Artworks Magazine article

Senior Editor Ben Basby interviewed a month back and it's been released online. It will be on newstands by the end of the week. In the mean time the After Midnight series has a new singer that just came on stage and a solo show has been scheduled for September this year. Peace!

And something way off topic. I just bought a nice little butcher block for my kitchen. I can't believe how expensive they can get. I found a good deal on Amazon. Why do I mention this? I want to be a better cook! So watch out! home made pesto, fish fillets... it's on!

i keep moving

Greetings peeps,
Mighty just got me matrixed in to the blog. I've been working away on the last video installment of the After Midnight series.
so without further delay here it is:

Lovers Redux from Steven Lopez on Vimeo.

With each video I'm learning more and more of video post production. All the city scenes are shot by me!

There's a lot going on right now. I'll be seeing Badu tomorrow at the Nokia Theatre here in LA. And I'll be checking her out at the after party. I'll also be working on an album cover for the heiroglyphics crew. That project is a joint effort between me and a marketing team. We'll be trading our skills to further each others projects. the PR people will be putting together a gallery show for me in LA, highlighting the After Midnight Series.

My head is overwhelmed with tasks and to-do's. There's a lot of growing that I've done since AMS took place. It's a blessing and a headache all at the same time. But what would I be doing if this wasn't going on? yeah I would be painting...but heading in a direction that has infinite potential is something that I haven't experienced before.

Peace!

"TAZROC" in the " Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle" - Hawaii

On May 30th in Honolulu, HI. I will be joining 11 other graffiti artists in the 3rd annual Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle. About every quarter decade I feel it is important for me to go back to my graffiti roots and be involved in something to fuel some fire, a battle... the sweet smell of a battle in the air. Battles, for money, fame, recognition, or fun, there is nothing I feel pushes someone more in this culture than battling! That's what hip hop is made of, and I frequently remind myself that I am a graffiti artist and hip hop is my culture, life, and love. Sometimes you just gotta get in the circle and know that you got moves that'll blow everyone away!
Since the late 80's, there was this writer "Mez", later went by "Noyse", use to want to battle because everyone wanted to know who was better...I think we battled like 3 times? Back then I didn't care who was better or had more fame, to me it was about unity and cultivating, since hip hop was scarce why beef? Since then I've been called out to battle several times, served this dude from L.A. in the mid 90's called some dudes out here and there but were no-shows, not very many people know this but "Frustr8" might have even called me out one time...yea you know what I'm talking about Frust? :P I entered a battle last year at "Crewest" for the movie "I Am Legend" ad campaign, that one took me back, didn't think I needed to battle anymore... I guess after 20 years I'm still hungry!
I remember when Me, Frust and Krime where piecing or Me, Frust and Cash were b-boying we had that fire, seeking that adrenalin rush.. you know the kind you get after servin dudes in a circle or rockin a piece that no one could touch... pieces that stay up for months! That's the feeling you can't get enough of...so regardless of the out come of the battle, this event is sure to push me to a new level or add a chapter to this Def Con 5 saga. Two. (that means two fingers, as in peace)

DJ Mighty Moves - The Hypercolor Powerglove Mixtape

“I Love the Hypercolor Powerglove Mixtape...It’s so Bad...”

That's right! I've been working on this Mixtape for a while now. Inspired by some of the party jams I used to hear on the radio when I was a growing up in the later 80's and early 90's. This was back when I was rocking neon green L.A. Gear kicks, a Gotcha Jacket, and an oh-so-necessary Hypercolor t-shirt (cuz after all, it changes color when you touch it). This was the era of the Powerglove, Ninja Turtles, and Fruit Stripe Gum. Know Your History.
